Missing Alabama Girl Found in Nearby Forest with Family Dog

Serenity Sanders, a 3-year-old girl reported missing in DeKalb County, Alabama last Thursday, was found safely on Friday morning.

Eric Gilbreath drove over two hours to help in the search for Serenity. Gilbreath’s son is Serenity’s half-brother, so he knew he had to do something to help.

“Your heart just falls out on the floor. My first thought was helping getting out there and looking,” said Gilbreath. “I wasn’t going to give up.”

When he arrived at a wooded area near her house, he grabbed his flashlight and headed out alone into the forest. “I just walked the ridge top, walked halfway down the ridge and walked the bottom of the ridge and went to the next one,” said Gilbreath.

After several hours of searching, his perseverance paid off.

“She was standing there behind the tree,” he said. “I walked behind the tree, and she said, “Hey Eric.’” Serenity wasn’t alone either. The family dog was right there with her. “That dog was still right there by her side.”

Gilbreath nearly had just as hard a time getting out of the forest as he did finding the girl. Luckily he was able to call the police and follow the sound of a police siren to help him find his way out.

While on their way back, he said that Serenity talked the whole way back. “She was talking about her scratches,” he said.

Serenity was taken to the hospital as a precaution but is expected to be fine.

This isn’t the first time this has happened either.
